Free naloxone kits offered to the public at the Elmore County Health Department

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Tim Hatch, (334) 567-1171

Due to the success of the ongoing distribution of free naloxone at the Montgomery County Health Department, the Elmore County Health Department has begun a similar offering at a second location.

Tim Hatch, administrator of the East Central Public Health District, said, "We see a clear need in the River Region, and data shows there is a high volume of overdose-related EMS calls in the Elmore County area. By making naloxone more easily available to the public, family, friends and bystanders, we can reduce the loss of life from opioid overdoses before emergency assistance arrives."

Naloxone (also known as Narcan) is a life-saving medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids, including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications. Naloxone is a lifeline, giving people a second chance at life and a path toward recovery.

Individual naloxone kits are now available to the public at no charge at the Elmore County Health Department. No ID or prescription is required. Elmore County Health Department is located on a major U.S. highway, at 6501 Highway 231 North, Wetumpka. Operating hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The free naloxone kits are offered at an easy-to-use kiosk, ensuring individuals, families, and community members can access this critical tool without barriers. Each naloxone kit includes the following: Two doses of naloxone nasal spray, instructions for use, and resource information for treatment and support.

People at an increased risk for opioid overdose, their family members, and friends are advised to carry naloxone and keep it at home. This fast-acting medication has no negative side effects and causes no harm if a person is overdosing on drugs other than opioids.

The kiosk and medication offered are made possible through the Pharmacy Division of the Alabama Department of Public Health, supported with funding provided from the CDC's Overdose Data to Action in States program.
