Israeli monitoring of pro-Palestine demonstrations in Italy

Israeli monitoring of pro-Palestine demonstrations in Italy

25.9.2025

Question for written answer E-003735/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Mimmo Lucano (The Left)

According to press reports, which have found confirmation in content published on the Israeli Government's official website, the Israeli authorities have been collecting and disseminating information on demonstrations held in Italy in support of the people of Palestine.

Such monitoring, if proven, would constitute serious outside interference in the domestic affairs of an EU Member State, as well as a potential violation of Italian sovereignty and of the fundamental rights enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, and in particular the freedom to express opinions and to demonstrate.

In the light of the above, can the Commission state:

  • 1.Whether it is aware that the Israeli Government has published information on demonstrations held in Italy?
  • 2.Whether it considers these practices to be in line with the principles of Member State sovereignty and safeguarding of the fundamental rights of EU citizens?
  • 3.What measures it intends to take, including in conjunction with the Italian authorities, to prevent and thwart Israeli Government surveillance activities on EU soil?
