Families Can't Afford a Shutdown: McClain Delaney Calls Out House Majority's Health Care Cuts
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (D-MD) released a statement after voting to protect Maryland families against rising costs:
"My top priority is the families I represent in the 6th District. As your representative, I do not want our government to shut down. But sadly, I cannot support a partisan spending bill that will only make life harder and less affordable by gutting the healthcare system of our country and creating economic uncertainty. This partisan bill will result in higher insurance premiums for everyone and the closing of hospitals and clinics. We must come together in good faith and ensure Congress-not the executive branch-has the power to appropriate funds for the betterment of our country.
In my district, one in seven Marylanders rely on Medicaid-including one in three children. More than 30,000 of our neighbors will lose coverage, and if Congress doesn't extend the Affordable Care Act, premiums will nearly double for 24 million Americans. Moreover, it is important that many of the funding freezes for research and agencies be reversed. That's not politics-that's saving people's lives."
