Families Can't Afford a Shutdown: McClain Delaney Calls Out House Majority's Health Care Cuts

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman April McClain Delaney (D-MD) released a statement after voting to protect Maryland families against rising costs:

"My top priority is the families I represent in the 6^th District. As your representative, I do not want our government to shut down. But sadly, I cannot support a partisan spending bill that will only make life harder and less affordable by gutting the healthcare system of our country and creating economic uncertainty. This partisan bill will result in higher insurance premiums for everyone and the closing of hospitals and clinics. We must come together in good faith and ensure Congress-not the executive branch-has the power to appropriate funds for the betterment of our country.

In my district, one in seven Marylanders rely on Medicaid-including one in three children. More than 30,000 of our neighbors will lose coverage, and if Congress doesn't extend the Affordable Care Act, premiums will nearly double for 24 million Americans. Moreover, it is important that many of the funding freezes for research and agencies be reversed. That's not politics-that's saving people's lives."

Democrats' Proposal:

• Extends government funding through October 31, 2025
• Reverses harmful Medicaid cuts in the Big Budget Bill
• Prevents a massive healthcare cost increase for 24 million Americans, averting premium hikes of 93% on average
  • Lowers healthcare costs across the board: a family of four making $125,000 will save $7,700 per year; a 60-year-old couple making $80,000 will save $17,500
  • Expands coverage to over 4 million Americans who will lose it if vital tax credits aren't extended
• Provides relief to working families, with over 90% of tax credit recipients earning less than approximately $63,000 per individual
• Protects lifesaving NIH medical research that was previously frozen
• Restores funding for public broadcasting
• Establishes an inspector general for OMB and prevents unilateral program cuts by the White House during the continuing resolution
• Safeguards Congress' power of the purse and prevents Republicans from rescinding bipartisan funding agreements for FY2026 and beyond
