WASHINGTON, DC - In a major rebuke of President Trump's reckless Iran war policy, the full U.S. Senate today voted 50-48 on a House-passed resolution to invoke the War Powers Act and halt unauthorized military operations in Iran.
Four Senate Republicans joined with Democrats to pass the non-binding resolution, which was previously passed by the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this month.
After the vote, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement:
"President Trump launched this irresponsible war without any coherent strategy and against the will of the American people. Today's bipartisan vote was historic in the sense that Republicans finally joined Democrats in checking the recklessness of President Trump and his Administration.
"President Trump continues to make America less secure. He has thrown our economy into chaos and has nothing of substance to show for it.
"I again urge Republicans to join Democrats in exercising real, necessary oversight of this misguided war. My colleagues should demand accountability and straightforward answers about the costs, objectives, and outcomes, including all agreements made as a result of President Trump's war in Iran."
Under the War Powers Act of 1973, the President must end military operations after 60 days unless Congress authorizes the use of force.
