CBJ Avalanche Advisory Update - January 8 (5:37 p.m.)

The potential for avalanches in all known slide paths (see map) remains high and very likely due to significantly increase in the next 24 hours due to increased snowfall, warmer temperatures and the potential for several inches of rain at high elevations.

Read more about the current Avalanche Hazard Update and snowpack conditions from CBJ's Avalanche Advisor at juneau.org/emergency/avalanche-information.

This is not an evacuation advisory; however, CBJ is closely watching conditions and may issue an evacuation advisory in the near future. CBJ will send out an emergency alert if an evacuation advisory is called. CBJ is prepositioning resources to prepare for potential emergency sheltering (Centennial Hall) as well as additional response resources should they be required.

Alaska DOT&PF will close Thane Road at the avalanche gates Friday, Jan. 9, 2026 at 12 p.m. (noon) due to high avalanche hazard to the roadway. This emergency closure will be re-evaluated at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10., however, Thane residents should be prepared for extended road closures.

CBJ will issue an alert if major changes are observed and an evacuation advisory is issued. You can find current hazard levels at bit.ly/CBJavalanche.

Residents should know their risk, remain alert, have a go-bag ready, prepare household evacuation plans and stay signed up for emergency alerts.
