Hundreds of Employees Came Together to Serve Neighborhoods and Energize Public Spaces
City of San José Hosts Inaugural Day of Service

SAN JOSE, Calif. (March 26, 2026) - Today, 600 employees deployed across the City for the first City of San José One Team, One City, One Community Day of Service. The event brought employees together, from across departments, to give back to the community through a variety of hands-on volunteer projects.

"What began as a simple idea to create an opportunity for City employees to step outside of their everyday roles to serve the community quickly grew into a meaningful, citywide effort," said City Manager Jennifer Maguire. "Seeing that vision come to life, with so many employees stepping up to make a difference, makes me incredibly proud to be part of this organization. I am very inspired by their dedication to our community and how each employee reflects the heart of public service."

City employee teams worked to address community needs while strengthening connections with one another and the community. Employees dedicated their time and energy to serve lunch at Senior Centers, as well as to perform beautification projects such as planting trees and painting a colorful mural, clean up trails and make cozy blankets for the Animal Care Center.

"I'm excited - for myself and my coworkers - to step away from our desks and help beautify neighborhoods and parks," said Kendra Yarn, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department Program Manager. "Spending time working directly in the community is a powerful reminder of our true mission: public service."

The Day of Service highlights the City's ongoing commitment to community engagement, civic pride, and teamwork. One of the City Manager's Foundational Strategic Support Focus Areas is Making San José a Great Place to Work, fostering a deeper sense of belonging to the organization and providing a work culture where employees feel connected, empowered and inspired to give back to the community they serve.
