Kaptur, Latta Introduce Bipartisan Legislation Honoring Fremont’s Rutherford B. Hayes Library and MuseumsPress Release

Fremont, OH - Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) and Congressman Bob Latta (OH-05) introduced a bipartisan resolution in recognition of the United States' first Presidential library, the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums. This year marks the 110th Anniversary of the Library and Museums and the 150th Anniversary of Rutherford B. Hayes' Presidential campaign.

"The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums have left an indelible mark on our region throughout its 110 years, and I am honored to celebrate an institution that serves as a model for preserving and celebrating Ohio and American history," said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). "In creating the first Presidential Library, Hayes' descendants showed the nation how to commemorate history in a manner that honors the sacrifices of those that came before and that seeks to teach future generations of the responsibility of citizenship."

"I'm proud to co-lead this resolution to honor and celebrate the 110th anniversary of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in Fremont, Ohio and the 150th anniversary of his presidential campaign," said Congressman Bob Latta (OH-05). "The Hayes Library was our nation's first Presidential Library, and beginning in the 120th Congress, this historic place will call Ohio's Fifth Congressional District home. President Hayes was a devoted public servant who dedicated his career to Ohio and our nation. It's important that we preserve significant elements of American history, such as the Hayes Library, to ensure future generations can learn about the lives of figures who have had a positive impact on our country."

Born in Delaware, Ohio in 1822, Hayes served as a Governor of Ohio and as the 19th President of the United States. After his death, Hayes' children cemented their father's legacy by creating the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums at the Hayes' residence at Spiegel Grove in Fremont, Ohio. The library and museums were the first of their kind, and they preserve the former President's personal library, his military service records, and materials and artifacts from his Presidency. The museums also takes careful effort to preserve and collect materials that showcase life along Lake Erie's south shoreline, along with artifacts from Ohio's history and other former presidents. It was used as a model for constructing the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in New York, the first official Federal Presidential library. Following the path of the Hayes and Roosevelt institutions, 16 Federal Presidential libraries exist today.
