Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun’s Regular Press Conference on January 19, 2026

Beijing Daily: We noted that last year, the trade volume between China and five Central Asian countries exceeded US$100 billion for the first time. What's your comment?

Guo Jiakun: According to the statistics released by the General Administration of Customs, China's trade with five Central Asian countries in 2025 topped US$100 billion, setting a record high. The trade structure has been improved, and more and more high-quality products from Central Asia entered the Chinese market. As global economic growth remains sluggish and the international trading system faces serious challenges, the economic and trade cooperation between China and Central Asian countries has withstood external headwinds, and the trade volume surpassed US$100 billion. This demonstrates the robust momentum of China-Central Asia cooperation and the leading role of the China-Central Asia mechanism, and has become a new milestone in China-Central Asia cooperation.

Over the past year, the relations between China and Central Asian countries have enjoyed fast growth, the China-Central Asia mechanism has been strengthened, Belt and Road cooperation has made steady progress, and friendly exchanges have brought people closer. In particular, the success of the Second China-Central Asia Summit ushered in a new phase of high-quality cooperation between the two sides. At the new historic starting point, China stands ready to work with Central Asian countries to build on the momentum, continue carrying forward the China-Central Asia spirit, strengthen the China-Central Asia mechanism, promote innovation-led, high-quality and results-oriented cooperation in various fields, and jointly build a closer China-Central Asia community with a shared future.

CCTV: It's reported that according to the survey report recently released by the American Chamber of Commerce in China, the proportion of responding U.S. companies in China who are optimistic of the growth in China's market is on the rise, and more than half expect to be profitable or very profitable in 2025. Over 70 percent report no plans to relocate operations, and nearly 60 percent plan to increase investment in China. According to latest statistics, China's GDP in 2025 exceeds RMB140 trillion, up by five percent compared with last year. Multiple international financial organizations have recently said that China's mega-size market and innovative production have been a magnet to foreign investment. What's your comment?

Guo Jiakun: The report you mentioned once again shows that China's mega-size market offers enormous opportunities to the world, and investing in China means staying ahead of the curve and becoming profitable. The success of American companies in China demonstrates that China and the U.S. benefit from cooperation and a steady, sound and sustainable relationship is in the interest of both sides.

This year marks the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan. China's economy is gathering momentum and growth drivers are on the upgrade. China will remain a source of stability, growth and innovation for the world economy. We welcome U.S. and other foreign companies to seize the opportunities of China's high-quality development and greatly benefit from China's multi-trillion-yuan market.

AFP: A couple of questions on Cambodia and scam compounds. Firstly, the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia said at the weekend that the disappearance of Chinese nationals into scam compounds was a serious obstacle to relations. Can you tell us more about how relations are threatened by this and what China hopes that Cambodia will do? And then the second part of the question is about recent reports that there are many Chinese nationals queuing outside the embassy in Cambodia after leaving scam compounds there. Can you confirm this? Can you tell us who these people are? How many of them have shown up at the embassy? And also are these queued people related to the recent arrest of Chen Zhi?

Guo Jiakun: The Chinese government attaches high importance to keeping overseas Chinese nationals safe. China has been actively cooperating with Cambodia in combating cross-border telecom and internet fraud, and has achieved notable progress. The Chinese Embassy in Cambodia is in communication and coordination with Cambodia, and relevant work is underway.

Polish Press Agency: Polish media reported that Poland's military is considering restrictions that would ban the entry of Chinese-made electric vehicles into military facilities. The move is driven by risks over sensitive data collected by the cars. What's China's comment?

Guo Jiakun: We noted the reports. National security should not be overstretched.

Bloomberg: About Greenland. Donald Trump has proposed levies on eight countries that have opposed his plan to acquire Greenland. He said on Saturday and he announced a 10 percent tariff on goods from eight European countries starting February 1 that will go up to 25 percent in June unless there's a deal for "the purchase of Greenland." We're wondering if the Foreign Ministry has any comment?

Guo Jiakun: China has stated its position on multiple occasions on Greenland. The international law underpinned by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter is the foundation of the current international order and must be upheld. We urge the U.S. to stop using the so-called "China threat" as a pretext for itself to seek selfish gains.
