The University of New Mexico Alumni Association will host its annual Veterans Day Celebration and Remembrance on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. at the UNM Alumni Memorial Chapel.
The event, presented in partnership with the UNM Alumni Veterans Chapter, the UNM Veteran & Military Resource Center, and UNM ROTC, honors the service and sacrifice of U.S. veterans, including UNM alumni who have served in the armed forces.
This year's ceremony will feature remarks from UNM President Garnett S. Stokes and a keynote address by retired U.S. Army Colonel Jim R. Keene, a 1988 UNM graduate and Grammy Award-winning conductor.
Keene, an Albuquerque native, served 31 years in the U.S. Army Bands Program, leading several of the military's premier ensembles, including the West Point Band and the U.S. Army Field Band. Under his leadership, the Field Band earned a Grammy Award for Best Immersive Audio Album for Soundtrack of the American Soldier, the first Grammy ever awarded to a military band.
The program will include the UNM ROTC Color Guard, bugle and organ music, and a live performance of the national anthem. Veterans in attendance will receive a commemorative pin, and a reception with refreshments will follow in the chapel courtyard.
