Hancher and Joffrey Ballet bring 'Dancing with Parkinson’s' workshop to Iowa City Senior Center

The Iowa City Senior Center (ICSC) is partnering with Hancher Auditorium to welcome instructors from the Joffrey Ballet dance company.

Instructors from the world-renowned dance company are offering a unique, tuition-free Dancing with Parkinson's Workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the ICSC Assembly Room.

Registration is required. Those interested can call the Iowa City Senior Center at 319-356-5220 or visit https://www.icgov.org/senior and locate the class listing.

Joffrey Ballet is one of the world's foremost dance companies. Founded in 1956, the company became a trailblazer for dance in America. According to their website, they were the first dance company to perform at the White House, at Jacqueline Kennedy's invitation, the first to appear on American television, and many more accolades.

"We are proud to partner with Hancher to bring nationally recognized arts engagement to older adults and their caregivers," said Senior Center Coordinator LaTasha DeLoach. "Access to creative expression is deeply important for quality of life, and we are excited to welcome the Joffrey Ballet to Iowa City."

The workshop at the ICSC is designed for people living with Parkinson's-and the caregivers, family members, and friends who support them to create an inclusive, supportive space to explore movement and expression through dance. Participants will be guided through elements of ballet, jazz, modern, tap, and improvisation while connecting movement with music, creativity, and community.

The first half of class takes place seated; the second half provides the option to stand or remain seated. All movement includes a seated demonstration so that every participant can engage fully

Participants are also welcome to arrive early for the Senior Center's regular Parkinson's Exercise Class at 10:00 a.m., offering an excellent warm-up opportunity.

For more information or assistance with registration, contact the Senior Center at 319-356-5220.
