The accolade comes after the school previously gained the bronze award in 2023.

The school was praised for their continued work supporting Service children in education and their positive engagement with the wider Armed Forces community, which is prominent in the area.

Cllr Eddie Williams, Armed Forces Champion, said: "It is wonderful to see Llanfair Primary School be recognised for their ongoing commitment to supporting Service children and their families in this way.

"The Vale of Glamorgan Council has a long history of welcoming children of Service Personnel to our schools and we have renewed our Armed Forces Covenant, which is a voluntary pledge that organisations take to demonstrate their support for the military community.

"Its principles ensure that those who serve, or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly and with respect.

"Achieving Silver Armed Forces Friendly School Status reflects Llanfair Primary School's dedication to understand and meet the needs of Service families in the Vale, and their efforts help ensure that every child feels valued and supported."

To achieve Silver Status schools must:

  • Have previously been awarded a Bronze Armed Forces Friendly School Cymru status
  • Organise for a member of the Armed Forces to deliver a session with Service children and their peers
  • Liaise with the SSCE Cymru Participation Lead Officer to explore options for listening to Service children
  • Completed the SCiP Alliance Thriving Lives Toolkit, providing a self-assessment of the school's support for Service children in all 7 principles and commit to an annual review
  • Complete at least 60% of activities/actions on the school checklist
