Hoyer Statement on August Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on the August jobs report:

"Today's jobs report continues to demonstrate the urgency with which the current Administration must address the affordability crisis. While our economy saw an increase of 162,000 jobs in August, inflation is rising faster than average household earnings. In fact, wage gains are rising at the slowest pace since the pandemic, leaving families with fewer resources to pay for gas, groceries, and medical care. For months, Americans have faced rising prices, and now, as a result of President Trump's trade war against Canada, costs will only continue to soar.

"Americans know all too well where the blame lies. President Trump's approval rating has reached a record low as workers and their families continue to worry about affordability; meanwhile, the majority of Americans disapprove of his handling of the economy and his endless war of choice in Iran, which is driving up gas prices. But rather than actually addressing the concerns of the public, the President has continued to focus on advantaging himself and his billionaire associates and on expensive vanity projects like the White House ballroom.

"President Trump and Republicans in Congress are doing everything they can to distract attention from the real issues facing Americans. While President Trump has said, absurdly, that the current economy is 'the greatest economy we've ever had, by far,' Americans know the truth: his claims are nothing but tall tales spun from his gilded halls of Mar-a-Lago. Americans deserve better, and House Democrats are ready to address the affordability crisis from day one if returned to the Majority."
