A Carmel man was taken into custody Thursday evening following an incident involving threats of violence that prompted a multi-agency law enforcement response and the temporary closure of Carmel Valley Road.

On August 20, 2026, at approximately 7:53 p.m., the Monterey County Sheriff's Office received a complaint regarding construction activity in the area of Carmel Valley Road near Carmel Middle School. During multiple subsequent telephone calls with public safety personnel, the caller became increasingly agitated and eventually made statements threatening to shoot and kill people.

The caller, identified as James Bodine, 45, of Carmel, also claimed to have access to numerous firearms, including a high-powered rifle.

Due to the escalating nature of Bodine's statements, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the California Highway Patrol and Carmel Police Department. Fire and emergency medical personnel were also staged nearby as a precaution. As deputies arrived, a portion of Carmel Valley Road was temporarily closed and civilians in the immediate area were safely evacuated.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office and Seaside Fire Department drones worked together to locate Bodine in vegetation near the construction area. Deputies contacted Bodine and attempted to take him into custody. Bodine physically resisted deputies but was ultimately arrested without further incident. Bodine was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

As part of the investigation, deputies located and seized a .22-caliber rifle from Bodine's residence.

Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto stated, "I want to thank the California Highway Patrol, Carmel Police Department, Seaside Fire Department, and our fire and emergency medical partners for their assistance during this incident. This was a coordinated response to a potentially dangerous situation, and by working together, we were able to safely resolve the incident while protecting the residents and motorists in the area."

Following medical clearance, Bodine was booked into the Monterey County Jail on charges including criminal threats (Penal Code § 422) and resisting, delaying, or obstructing a peace officer (Penal Code § 148). His bail was set at $150,000.00
