Deaths of Brazilian nationals in Lebanon as a result of Israeli attacks

The Brazilian government has learned, with consternation and deep sorrow, of the deaths on April 26 of an 11-year-old Brazilian child, his mother, also Brazilian, and his Lebanese father, who were victims of an attack by the Israel Defense Forces. Another child of the couple, also Brazilian, is currently hospitalized. At the time of the bombing, the family was at their residence in the district of Bint Jbeil, in southern Lebanon.

This attack constitutes yet another example of the repeated and unacceptable violations of the ceasefire announced on April 16, which have already resulted in the deaths of dozens of Lebanese civilians, including women and children, as well as a journalist and two French members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

While expressing its sincere condolences to the families of the victims, Brazil reiterates its strongest condemnation of all attacks perpetrated during the ceasefire, both by Israeli forces and by Hezbollah. Brazil further condemns the systematic demolition of homes and other civilian structures in southern Lebanon carried out in recent weeks by Israeli forces, as well as the continued forced displacement of more than one million Lebanese civilians.

In this context, Brazil urges the parties to fully comply with the terms of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006), which established the ceasefire that ended the 2006 war, and calls for the immediate cessation of hostilities, along with the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory.

The Embassy of Brazil in Beirut is in contact with the family of the deceased Brazilian nationals in order to provide consular assistance, including to the hospitalized child.
