SPARKS, Nev.- The Sparks Fire Department will place seven Green Waste Dumpsters throughout Sparks from October 13-21, 2025, to encourage residents to dispose of vegetation and improve defensible space around their homes.

The City was awarded a $29,000 grant from the Nevada Fire Chiefs Association (NFCA) to help reduce wildfire risk and improve defensible space. The 2025-2026 NFCA Wildfire Risk Reduction Program supports placing the dumpsters across the city with educational banners and QR codes linking to resources on wildfire prevention and defensible space strategies.

Dumpsters will be available at the following locations:

  • Tumbleweed Trails Park on Bareback Drive
  • Homerun Drive at Touchdown Drive, at the entrance to GERP
  • Village Knoll Drive at Sparks Boulevard
  • Wedekind Regional Park at 11 Disc Drive
  • Wedekind Regional Park at the 4th Street Trailhead
  • Rio Alayne Court, at the north cul-de-sac
  • Vecchio Drive, east of Vincinato Drive

"By providing easily accessible green waste dumpsters, we hope to increase community participation in wildfire mitigation," said Sparks Fire Chief Walt White. "The program supports both fire preparedness and community education and is a proactive way to help residents reduce fuels on their property while learning about best practices through our partners at Fire Adapted Nevada and the Living with Fire Program."

The program is strictly for green yard waste and debris, including leaves, branches, and grass clippings, and is free to City of Sparks residents.

Items such as furniture, appliances, hazardous chemicals, and construction materials will not be accepted or allowed in the dumpsters. Individuals responsible for illegal dumping will be held liable for any additional costs.

For more information on dumpster locations, defensible space, fire-safe landscaping, and wildfire prevention, visit cityofsparks.us/greenwaste or scan the QR codes on the green waste dumpsters.

The dumpsters, provided by Waste Management at a discounted rate, will be available again in spring 2026. For inquiries, please contact us at (775) 353-2255 or [email protected].
