Students Take Part in Inaugural Arkansas Collegiate Civic Leadership Academy

JONESBORO - Eight Arkansas State University students are participating in the inaugural Arkansas Collegiate Civic Leadership Academy hosted by the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute.

The program features seven interactive sessions hosted in Little Rock, at the Institute in Morrilton and delivered online.

Tailored for junior and senior student leaders from higher education institutions across the state, the program immerses them in topics such as government, journalism, elections and service. It provides participants with the knowledge, skills and experiences needed to become successful leaders in their communities.

The students participating are Ayden George, junior political science major from Walnut Ridge, George Vaughan, a senior political science major from Paragould, Taylor McIntyre, a senior political science major from Beebe, Joseline Munoz, a sophomore interdisciplinary studies major from Forrest City, Emily Hill, a senior political science major from Paragould, Natalie Dunman, a senior political science major from Lepanto, Levi Seward, a junior political science major from Blytheville and Cian Deevers, a senior political science major from Jonesboro.

Vaughn says the program has been impactful.

"Participating in a program that brings together civically engaged students from across the state, motivating one another to grow as active, responsible citizens, has been truly inspiring," he said.

Dr. Cameron Wimpy, associate professor of political science and Government, Law and Policy department chair, recently accompanied the students to the program's orientation kickoff at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute in Morrilton. He is excited for what lies ahead over the next several months, as the students continue throughout the program.

"Our department strives to maximize opportunities for students. The need for informed citizens with real analytical and writing skills has never been greater, and we believe our students are well positioned to have an impact," he said.

Wimpy sits on the program's advisory committee and helped develop the curriculum through a collaborative effort with committee members and several higher education personnel from around the state.

"It is exciting to see this all come together as we have worked on it for more than a year. The credit for the idea and overall structure goes to the Institute and our whole team, but I am especially proud of how well our students engaged with the curriculum. I believe there is a real chance to have a lasting effect on civic engagement and leadership in the state," said Wimpy.

The participants meet throughout the 2025 - 2026 academic year, culminating on April 10, 2026, with a graduation ceremony at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute.
