Judiciary Operating During Shutdown

Tuesday, October 7, 2025

Despite a federal government-wide shutdown that began on October 1, 2025, the Judiciary remains open and will continue paid operations through Friday, October 17, 2025 - by using court fee balances and other funds not dependent on a new appropriation.

If the funding lapse continues after Judiciary funds are exhausted, the courts will then operate under the terms of the Anti-Deficiency Act. That allows essential work to continue during a lapse in appropriations if it is necessary for courts to fulfill constitutional and statutory duties to hear and resolve cases and proceedings. Additional information on court operations during the funding lapse is available HERE.
