‘I Hope to Continue Growing’

During her time serving as a military police sergeant with the 535th Military Police Bn., VFW "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship" recipient Brandi Douglass discovered her passion for helping others navigate challenging situations.

A mother of two, Douglass made it her goal to contribute to systemically improving access to mental health and substance use services. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D., in Social Work Education at Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Douglass also is a LCSW (licensed clinical social worker) in both Ohio and West Virginia and currently works as an Integrated Services for Behavioral Health manager.

"As a veteran, mother and behavioral health leader, my long-term goal is to continue improving access to mental health and substance use services in underserved communities, while also advocating for veterans and families navigating complex systems of care," Douglass said.

To help reach her goals, Douglass applied for the VFW's "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship" after researching financial pathways for degree-seeking veterans.

"Compared to many other scholarship applications, the process of applying for the Help A Hero scholarship felt much more personal and genuinely focused on supporting veterans' long-term success," Douglass said.

Prior to applying for the scholarship, Douglass was aware of VFW and its continued commitment to veterans.

"I have always respected the organization's advocacy and continued support for veterans and their families," Douglass said. "Receiving this scholarship has made me even more appreciative of the work VFW does for veterans pursuing their education and career goals. I hope to continue growing as a leader, educator and mentor within the behavioral health field."
