DBS Z Visa Platinum strengthens sustainability commitment by encouraging customers to manage waste through an integrated ecosystem that brings tangible benefits for the environmen
Head of Card and Loan Business PT Bank DBS Indonesia Ari Lastina stated, "Bank DBS Indonesia is committed to implementing long-term, replicable sustainability programmes that encourage the empowerment of local communities. We believe that systemic change brings more significant benefits than one-off assistance. Therefore, we invest in ecosystems that can foster a sustainable circular economy, including through the 'Zustainable Ways Project' programme. Through this initiative we want to expand this impact through customer engagement and make sustainability part of everyday life. Naturally, this is in line with our vision as the 'Best Bank for A Better World', particularly in contributing to efforts to achieve Indonesia's net zero emission (NZE) target by 2060."
Right now, the programme's main focus is on developing an integrated waste management model in Ciamis. This area was chosen because it has a strong collaborative culture, government support for waste management, and an active waste bank network that is ready to be developed through an integrated digital approach. Together with Duitin, Bank DBS Indonesia has built a new digital waste bank, digitising three existing waste banks, and three quail farms as part of an interconnected waste management ecosystem. Through this model, inorganic waste can be collected, sorted, and recycled as raw material, while organic waste is processed into animal feed through the cultivation of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae or maggots. The feed is then used to support quail farm operations while also creating additional income opportunities for the community.
This step is consistent with data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) which showed that there were 20,587 waste banks in Indonesia in 2024, up by 20.2 percent from 2023. Over the course of the year, the total amount of waste collected reached 138,610 tonnes. This increase was in line with the growth in economic value generated, which amounted to IDR 10.1 billion throughout the year. This positive trend demonstrates the increasingly strong economic impact felt by the community generated through the waste management activities.
As part of the expansion of this initiative, Bank DBS Indonesia also launched the 'Zustainable Ways Challenge' to encourage customers to take an active role in managing waste from their homes. The programme encourages customers to take simple but impactful steps by sorting and managing household waste more responsibly. By recycling at least 5 kg of waste and spending Rp3 million per month, customers can have an opportunity to receive shopping vouchers worth millions of rupiah as exclusive rewards.
"This collaboration stemmed from the belief that big changes start with simple steps taken collectively. Bank DBS Indonesia and Duitin share a common passion for improving people's lives while preserving the environment by reducing reusable waste as well as enhancing food security through the supply of quail eggs in Ciamis Regency. Through this programme, we want to encourage people to start contributing to environmental preservation at home by sorting domestic waste. This is not just a #GerakanDaurUlang but also part of an effort to build new habits that are beneficial for the Earth and the future," said Director PT Tjatra Yasa Indonesia (Duitin) Adijoyo Prakoso.
Through Duitin's digital system, all waste bank activities, from collection and sorting to the distribution of recycled materials, are recorded transparently, allowing people to see the environmental impact in a more measurable way. This mechanism is designed as a circular economy model that can be replicated in various regions and form the foundation for a community-based sustainability ecosystem.
Allocating 0.5% of Each Transaction for Ecosystem Restoration
As a credit card that promotes sustainability, Bank DBS Indonesia set aside 0.5 percent of the value of every transaction made through the DBS Z Visa Platinum Credit Card during the period 15 October to 31 December 2024 to support various environmental initiatives as part of the 'Zustainable Ways Project'.
In the initial stage of this initiative, Bank DBS Indonesia ran two clean-up activities to clean the Ciliwung River (23 September 2024) and the Bekasi River (21 February 2025). Through these two activities, more than 300 kg of waste were collected and sorted, more than 60 trees were planted along the riverbanks, and 2,000 fish seeds were released to support the restoration of the aquatic ecosystem.
The commitment is also shown through the fact that every DBS Z Visa Platinum Credit Card is made from recycled plastic, cutting plastic waste by 3.18 grammes and CO₂ emissions by 7 grammes. This product is a tangible manifestation of Bank DBS Indonesia's sustainability pillars, namely Responsible Banking and Impact Beyond Banking, which integrate sustainability into banking products and services and contribute to the wider community beyond the scope of banking.
