KC Water breaks ground on Lab improvements

KC Water leadership along with members of the Kansas City City Council and City Manager's office broke ground today on the first major renovation of the department's laboratory.

Located next to KC Water's water treatment facility in the Northland, the laboratory plays a vital role in protecting public health. Every day, laboratory staff test and monitor the city's drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater. From tracking minerals to detecting contaminants, their work ensures compliance with state and federal regulations

With the expansion, Laboratory staff will be able to expand the scope of analysis, enabling the department to keep up with changes in regulations and technological advancement.

"This investment in our laboratory is an investment in Kansas City's future," said KC Water Director Kenneth Morgan. "By expanding our testing capacity, KC Water is ensuring that our community continues to receive safe, reliable, and high-quality water for generations to come."

For Jessica Jensen, KC Water's newly promoted Operations Officer, the project represents both professional and personal pride.

"As someone who has worked in this lab for many years, I know how essential our testing is to protecting the community," said Jessica Jensen, Operations Officer. "This expansion gives our team the space and tools to stay ahead of regulatory changes and scientific advancements, while continuing to deliver accurate and timely results for our customers."

Expansion and renovations phase one will be complete in July 2026 with overall completion in May 2027. During this time Lab services will not be impacted. KC Water is committed to consistent monitoring of all water, wastewater and stormwater.
