HHSC to Host Hiring Event for Austin State Hospital

AUSTIN - The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is inviting qualified jobseekers to learn more about careers at Austin State Hospital during a hiring event March 12.

The hospital is looking to fill multiple positions, including registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, psychiatric nursing assistants, food service workers, maintenance workers and housekeepers.

"We encourage anyone who's interested in a rewarding career in health care to apply for these open positions," said Stacey Thompson, superintendent of Austin State Hospital. "Our beautiful new campus in central Austin is looking for dedicated staff who are focused on the wellness and recovery of our patients."

HHSC offers competitive pay and employee benefits. Depending on experience, monthly salaries range from:

  • $2,769 to $3,047 for psychiatric nursing assistants.
  • $5,746 to $7,532 for registered nurses.
  • $2,518 to $3,581 for food service workers and housekeepers.

HHSC provides employer-paid health benefits and paid vacation and sick leave.

Interviews will be conducted on site, and conditional offers may be made to qualified candidates. Candidates must pass a background check before they start work.

Applicants must bring approved I-9 documentation, such as a valid driver's license or identification, Social Security card, birth certificate, U.S. passport or permanent resident card.

Austin State Hospital is an inpatient hospital offering psychiatric services and forensic competency restoration. More than 800 employees serve over 200 patients at the hospital. HHSC opened a new, state-of-the-art replacement hospital on the existing Austin State Hospital campus in 2024.
