U.S. News & World Report ranks Buffalo General Medical Center #1 in Buffalo Metro Area

Buffalo General Medical Center (BGMC) has once again been recognized as a Best Hospital for 2026-2027 by U.S. News & World Report. The Kaleida Health facility ranked #1 in the Buffalo Metro Area and #23 in New York State for the annual Best Hospitals ranking. The annual rankings and ratings, now in their 37th year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors make informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions and common elective procedures.

This is the ninth consecutive year that BGMC, in conjunction with other Kaleida Health facilities, earned the top spot in the Buffalo Metro Area. U.S. News & World Report factors in volume, stats and quality metrics. The evaluation of Kaleida Health-Buffalo General Medical Center includes Kaleida Health's adult services and performance data, primarily from inpatient areas and some outpatient surgical areas like ENT, orthopaedics, urology, etc. U.S. News utilizes claims data along with other publicly reportable measures.

In 2026-2027 U.S. News Best Hospitals ranked hospitals in the U.S. in 14 adult specialties as well as recognized hospitals by state, metro and regional areas for their work in 23 more widely performed procedures and conditions. BGMC earned "High Performing" ratings in the following 10 procedures and conditions:

  • Gynecological Cancer Surgery
  • Lung Cancer Surgery
  • Heart Attack
  • Aortic Valve Surgery
  • Heart Bypass Surgery
  • Heart Failure
  • Pacemaker Implantation
  • Stroke
  • Hip Replacement
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

An overall rating of High Performing indicates a hospital was significantly better than the national average in a given procedure or condition. In the 2026-2027 ratings, U.S. News rated more than 4,200 hospitals with 1,802 rated High Performing in at least one procedure or condition.
