WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement in response to President Trump's Truth Social post ordering Attorney General Pam Bondi to prosecute his political opponents:
"President Trump said the quiet part out loud: he wants his political opponents prosecuted and imprisoned by any means necessary. It's clear that Trump views the Department of Justice as his personal law firm and that the loyalists he installed at DOJ are there to serve the President in his personal pursuits, and not the American people.
"Our constitutional system depends on the Department of Justice's ability to pursue justice, without fear or favor. However, Trump's demand that Bondi weaponize the Department to punish his enemies exposes just how subservient Bondi and the rest of his appointees are. Trump is commandeering the DOJ to instill fear to silence and intimidate those who oppose and disagree with them and to wield favor to reward those who fall in line.
"This country cannot function with a system of justice for Trump, and one for the rest of us. My Republican colleagues can no longer bury their heads in the sand and ignore the truth. They must join us in condemning this Administration's brazen assault on the rule of law."
