Sen. Ossoff Working Across the Aisle to Combat Opioid Crisis

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is backing new bipartisan legislation to help prevent opioid deaths.

Sen. Ossoff is cosponsoring the bipartisan Overcoming Prevalent Inadequacies in Overdose Information Data Sets Act (OPIODS) of 2025 to help reduce the constraints law enforcement and laboratories across the nation face when collecting integral data on emerging opioid variants.

This bipartisan bill, first introduced by Sens. Mike Scott (R-SD) and Peter Welch (D-VT), would help improve the data collection about opioid overdoses and variations, including the authorization of grants to incentivize data collection and sharing, and improve the accuracy of information to support ongoing opioid response.

"Too many Georgians have died or lost loved ones to opioid overdoses. I am cosponsoring this bipartisan legislation to help save lives across the State," Sen. Ossoff said.

Sen. Ossoff continues working to help Georgia's communities fight opioid addiction.

In August, Sens. Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock announced $900,000 in Federal funding through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to support efforts across Georgia to fight the opioid crisis.

Last December, Sen. Ossoff passed into law his bipartisan Detection Equipment and Technology Evaluation to Counter the Threat of (DETECT) Fentanyl and Xylazine Act to require the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate to research and develop technologies that better detect drug trafficking across the southern border.

In 2024, Sen. Ossoff announced $2.25 million in Federal funding to rural health centers through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to help those struggling with substance use disorder.

In 2023, Sen. Ossoff delivered $7 million to the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) to strengthen Georgia's response to the opioid epidemic and save lives.

In 2022, Sen. Ossoff passed into law his bipartisan Rural Opioid Abuse Prevention Act to help rural communities experiencing high rates of opioid overdoses respond to the crisis.
