1872 Launches Autonomous Steel Fabrication Factory Model in Cincinnati and Closes $15 million Seed Funding Round

The O.H.I.O. Fund, investing through its private funds, leads one of Ohio's largest-ever seed rounds to support AI-driven, autonomous manufacturing that meets growing market demand.

1872, a startup focused on AI-native manufacturing, today announced its opening, introducing what will be an automated steel fabrication factory model in Cincinnati's Camp Washington neighborhood. The company, founded by three former SpaceX engineers, is propelled by a $15 million seed funding round, one of the largest in Ohio history, made through private funds advised by The O.H.I.O. Fund, a private fund investment adviser seeking to generate strong returns for investors while creating economic growth in Ohio.

1872 introduces a unique AI-based factory automation solution to an industry that has struggled to innovate and has been unable to keep up with rising demand for steel products in the modular construction and infrastructure markets. The company's proprietary system integrates AI software that understands the physical world with advanced automation from companies such as Ohio-based Path Robotics. This technology automates heavy fabrication tasks that have traditionally relied on manual labor, now in critically short supply. Early automations are in place at 1872, with the company expecting to achieve its full autonomous vision in 2027.

1872's model plans and orchestrates all downstream welding operations, managing every aspect of the manufacturing process, from purchasing materials and logistics to ingesting 3D designs, controlling robotics and other machines, and moving massive steel components across the shop floor. In an industry that traditionally relies on highly manual and inefficient processes, the company expects to cut lead times for its customers from months or years to weeks for products that typically take months or years to produce.

1872's first factory will serve as a prototype, demonstrating how the company can create and automate an end-to-end production line for fabricated metal parts. 1872's AI-first technology can then be scaled to meet new customer needs and to build future factories that expand the technology across manufacturing industries.

Integrating software, hardware, and physical AI

To create its autonomous factory, 1872 will combine AI, software, and robotics, which include:

  • Factory OS: the company's proprietary, AI-based software platform that coordinates the entire product creation process, from materials sourcing and cost estimates to stock availability and production planning, and to the movement of materials, machines, and robots.
  • 1872 agentic AI systems: trained to think like welders, buyers, material planners, logistics professionals, and other domain experts to build, monitor, and maintain Factory OS.
  • Path Robotics, the global leader in physical AI for manufacturing, will provide robotic welding systems, including Obsidian™, Path Robotics' foundational physical AI model that delivers real-time, intelligent, adaptive welding.

Rebuilding Ohio's manufacturing heritage

Housed in Camp Washington's historic Spring Grove Avenue corridor, 1872's new factory occupies the original 1903 David Hummel Building Company facility. The company was a stone masonry firm that built both Cincinnati's architecturally significant City Hall and Union Terminal. 1872 took its name from the year Andrew Carnegie built the world's first steel mill.

The company chose to locate in Ohio for its pipeline of skilled labor and office talent, as well as graduates and robotics experts from top engineering schools such as the University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, and nearby Purdue University, Carnegie Mellon University, and others. The state's history of manufacturing, innovation, and heavy industry also drew the team here.

Today, 1872 aims to meet the needs of a U.S. market that produces about $350 billion in fabricated metal products annually. Meanwhile, more than 2 million new skilled laborers will be needed to meet surging demand over the next decade, but the American Welding Society expects a shortfall of 320,000 welders by 2030.
