Fearless Futures: SEMO Graduate Expands Global Teaching Impact

For James Foote, pursuing a graduate degree from Southeast Missouri State University meant continuing his work as an educator while expanding his ability to support students around the world.

Originally from Arkansas and now teaching at the university level in China, Foote will graduate this spring with a Master of Arts in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).

Foote said his coursework at SEMO directly strengthened his work in the classroom.

"My studies have deepened my engagement with TESOL and strengthened how I support students' English language development," he said. "What makes my career rewarding is seeing students gain confidence and grow as they reach their goals."

I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT TEACHING

Balancing full-time teaching with graduate study required flexibility, something Foote found through SEMO's online program.

"The flexibility of the online learning environment allowed me to balance my studies with full-time teaching while still engaging meaningfully with the coursework," he said. "I always felt supported and challenged throughout my time in the program."

Foote said his experience at SEMO also shaped how he approaches both his work and his own expectations.

"Without SEMO, I wouldn't have been able to separate excellence from perfection," he said.

As he begins his next chapter, Foote plans to pursue opportunities in ESOL curriculum design and higher education, continuing his work helping students develop language skills and confidence.
