UNESCO empowers youth in Nineveh to build sustainable livelihoods.

Through the KOICA-funded project "Enhancing Employability for Vulnerable Youth in Nineveh, Iraq," youth are gaining practical TVET skills that help them launch careers or start their own businesses.

Iman and Thanoon are beneficiaries of the project, and they share their stories below:

Iman (Upholstery training graduate)

"This was my first time learning upholstery skills, such as making cushions and sofas. After the training, I bought a sewing machine to start my own business. I took my sample cushions to the market to explore opportunities. By showing my work around, I was fortunate to receive orders from a cushion and sofa shop at the bazaar. So far, I have supplied 250 pieces, and I am now working on 75 more for the next order. I am doing all of this on my own, and I feel proud of my achievement."

Thanoon (Solar Power Installation Training Graduate):

"My cousin owns a shop in Mosul that sells solar panels and related equipment. After completing this three-month workshop, I realized I could join his business by offering installation services, skills I gained here. This creates a win-win opportunity for both of us: he expands his services, and I apply my training in a practical way. With the growing demand for solar panels, I see this as a promising business venture."

Stories like Iman's and Thanoon's show how access to skills training can transform young people's futures. UNESCO remain committed to empowering youth in Nineveh with the skills and opportunities they need to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to their communities.
