The IAM Union is mourning the loss of Mary Allen Fones, long-time kitchen supervisor at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, who passed away on March 15, 2026. She was 76 years old.
For 33 years, Fones worked in the kitchen at the Winpisinger Center, where she became known not only for her incredible work ethic and dedication but also for the laughter she brought into the workplace. She was hired as a cook, advanced to kitchen leadperson, and served as kitchen supervisor from 1995 until her retirement in 2013. Fones was one of the first three staffers hired at the Winpisinger Center, where she was hired on the spot by former IAM International President William W. Winpisinger.
Her days were filled with joking, teasing, and sharing laughs with coworkers who quickly became lifelong friends. She had a way of making even the busiest shifts feel lighter, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of working beside her.
"Mary's impact on the Winpinsinger Center is measured by all the laughs and smiles she gave our members and staff over her career," said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. "She touched so many of our members' lives with her lovable personality and cooking skills. Our union is better off for her many years of dedication and we send our deepest condolences to Mary's loved ones."
Mary had a true gift in the kitchen. Cooking was one of the many ways she showed her love, and she poured her heart into every dish she made. She loved sharing an appetizer, trying new foods, and dining with family-never passing up a plate of nachos, one of her favorites.
Fones was a lifelong resident of Hollywood, Md., and was a deeply cherished member of the community. She was known for her support of many southern Maryland community events, including the local Moose lodge, with her special way of enlightening many lives with her warmth, humor and love.
Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to the Patuxent Moose Lodge in honor of Mary Fones.
