How New Brunswick’s ‘Make It Count’ Meters Aid People in Crisis

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (August 20, 2026) - Bright red parking meters scattered across New Brunswick are transforming spare change into emergency relief for the City's unhoused residents.

Launched in 2020, the "Make It Count" program offers an alternative to direct panhandling donations. Managed jointly by the City, the New Brunswick Parking Authority, and the United Way of Central Jersey, the initiative pools meter donations to cover hotel stays, bus fares, and train tickets for people facing housing crises.

Since its inception during the initial COVID-19 lockdowns, the program has raised an estimated $20,000. It has funded long-term hotel shelter for residents displaced by Hurricane Ida, rides to local warming centers on frigid nights, and transit fares for stranded individuals seeking to return to family.

The City is now working with the parking authority to upgrade the meters with updated credit card technology to expand fundraising efforts.
