When the school year ends and summer begins, many students look forward to a break-but educators warn of a seasonal challenge known as the "summer slide," or Summer Learning Loss.
The summer slide refers to the tendency for students-especially in elementary school-to lose some of the academic gains they made during the year. Reading skills are particularly vulnerable, and some students can lose months of progress without regular practice. Over time, these setbacks can add up, widening gaps between students who read during the summer and those who don't.
Reading is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent summer learning loss. Just 15-20 minutes a day helps maintain vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence. It also builds imagination and curiosity. Letting kids choose what they read-from graphic novels to audiobooks-keeps reading enjoyable and engaging.
The Role of Libraries
Libraries play a key role in supporting summer reading. Programs like the Summer Reading Program offer challenges, prizes, and events to keep kids motivated. At the Hillsboro Public Library, families can find books, digital resources, and activities that make reading fun and social.
While the summer slide is a real concern, it's also an opportunity. With regular reading, kids can return to school not just prepared, but inspired and ready to learn.
The Summer Reading Program starts June 1 and continues all summer long!
