CABEI plants 500 native trees in the Las Plazuelas Nature Reserve in Nicaragua to combat climate change

Managua, October 8, 2025. In line with the 2025-2029 Institutional Strategy, which aims to generate a positive impact on the planet through ecological restoration, conservation of key species, and climate change mitigation, more than 40 volunteers participated in the reforestation day promoted by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI).

The Multilateral Development Bank is undertaking this reforestation project, which has a high environmental and social impact, in the Las Plazuelas Nature Reserve, an area of approximately 1,900 acres. The project involves planting a total of 500 native trees. This strategic intervention increases vegetation cover and improves the habitat for local biodiversity, thereby strengthening the health of ecosystems from the slopes of the Mombacho volcano to the volcanic lagoons of Mecatepe, including Laguna de Aguas Calientes, Laguna Blanca, Laguna Verde, and Las Siete Lagunetas.

Through this project, CABEI promotes volunteer participation by creating learning opportunities and strengthening institutional commitment to sustainability. This collaboration between the financial sector and environmental conservation establishes a replicable model for future interventions.

This initiative aims to offset the paper consumption resulting from the Bank's activities, in line with the Environmental Management System (EMS), and forms part of the Corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility System (CERS). These actions demonstrate how sustainability guides CABEI's actions and is a key tool for evaluating its impact and performance, positioning the institution as a strategic ally in the country's economic, environmental, and social development.

The Bank remains committed to reducing carbon emissions and promoting resilience to climate change in its partner countries, ensuring efforts to promote social development and competitiveness, and achieving environmental viability in the medium and long term.
