When Brooke Foster graduates from The University of Toledo Saturday, May 2, she will step into her healthcare career with plenty of hands-on experience already under her belt.

A Toledo native and St. Ursula Academy graduate, Foster began her college journey undecided, choosing to stay close to home while discovering her path.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS: UToledo recognizes the Class of 2026 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at spring commencement.

That direction came after shadowing respiratory therapists at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. The fast-paced environment and direct impact on patient care left a lasting impression, motivating her to pursue a position in the hospital's respiratory department.

Now working as a respiratory care assistant, she supports respiratory therapists, administers treatments, performs lab draws and cares for patients during 12-hour shifts.

"I fell in love with the hands-on care and the relationships you build with both patients and your team," she said.

To gain admission into the respiratory care program, Foster had to overcome the hurdle of a rigorous required chemistry course, dedicating her summer to passing the class.

"After a lot of hard work, I passed and that's when I could finally see my future clearly," she said.

Once in the program, Foster thrived in the small classes, building meaningful relationships with faculty and classmates.

"The support from my instructors has been incredible," she said. "They've helped me become more confident and prepared for what's ahead."

Foster has expanded her clinical experience in high-acuity settings, gaining hands-on training in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units at ProMedica Toledo Hospital and C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.

Brooke Foster graduates Saturday with a degree in respiratory care and a pediatric residency at ProMedica Toledo Hospital.

Her commitment has also been recognized academically. Foster was inducted into Lambda Beta, an honor awarded to the top 25% of students in each graduating respiratory care class, and she will graduate magna cum laude.

She has already secured her next step: a pediatric residency program at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where she will continue training with the goal of transitioning into a full-time role.

"I've enjoyed seeing Brooke's growth the past two years," said Christa Turley, a senior lecturer in the Department of Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences and director of clinical education for the Respiratory Care Program. "She has really pushed herself to seek out enhanced learning experiences. I believe she will continue to thrive in the future, and I look forward to seeing what she can contribute to the profession of respiratory care."

For students considering a future in healthcare, her advice is simple.

"Take the time to explore and find what truly connects with you," she said. "Those experiences make all the difference."
