As part of her ongoing contacts with leaders in the region, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation this evening with the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
During the conversation, the two leaders expressed their support for the negotiation process underway to reach a lasting resolution to the crisis that can ensure a regional security framework and lead to a sustainable reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. They also reiterated the importance of reaching an agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue, as this represents a necessary pillar for regional stability.
The two leaders also discussed the situation in Lebanon, stressing the need for an immediate ceasefire and sharing their support for the prospect of direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon.
In addition, President Meloni and President El-Sisi analysed the serious security and humanitarian repercussions of the crisis. In particular, President Meloni pointed out that continuing instability in the Gulf area and Middle East risks multiplying social and economic fragility, potentially also leading to migration emergencies towards the shores of the Mediterranean. In this regard, the two leaders therefore renewed their commitment to consolidating the bilateral partnership aimed at managing migration flows and cooperating even more closely in the fight against human traffickers.
