Media Statement: Reiger Park Murders of Anti-Gang Members Demands Urgent and Decisive Action To Ensure Perpetrators Are Found

Parliament, Saturday, 8 August 2026 - The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Ian Cameron, has learnt with deep sadness of the killing of two South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Gang Unit members in Reiger Park, Gauteng, yesterday evening.

Mr Cameron has called on SAPS management in Gauteng to leave no stone unturned in the investigation and ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to book. "The killing of SAPS members is unacceptable and cannot be normalised. Every available resource must be mobilised to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible. Gangs must understand that an attack on law enforcement officers is an attack on the state and its legitimate authority to enforce the law," said Mr Cameron.

The Chairperson said the killing once again underscores the urgent need to strengthen efforts to dismantle organised gangs and protect communities living under the threat of gang violence.

"Our communities deserve to live without fear. When police officers are murdered in the line of duty and there is no swift and decisive response, it sends a dangerous message to communities and emboldens criminal networks. We need urgent, intelligence-driven investigations that disrupt these gangs and bring those responsible to justice," he said.

Mr Cameron called on SAPS management to strengthen crime intelligence operations aimed at infiltrating and dismantling gang networks in Reiger Park and other gang-affected areas. He said intelligence-led policing must be at the centre of efforts to identify gang leadership, disrupt their operations and prevent further attacks.

He also emphasised the need for the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to make a meaningful impact in areas affected by serious and organised crime.

"The deployment of the SANDF must translate into tangible results for communities. The people of Reiger Park need to see and feel the impact of this intervention. This tragic incident must strengthen, rather than weaken, our resolve to reclaim communities from the grip of organised criminal gangs and restore confidence in law enforcement," Mr Cameron said.

The Chairperson stressed that the safety of police officers must remain a priority, noting that officers cannot be expected to confront heavily armed and organised criminal networks without adequate intelligence, operational support and resources.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the two SAPS members who were tragically killed. He wished them strength during this difficult period and commended the officers for their service and sacrifice in the fight against crime.
