City of San José Earns Top Global Climate Rating on CDP Cities A List

SAN JOSE, Calif. (January 13, 2026) - The City of San José has been named to the CDP Cities A List for 2025. CDP, formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project, awarded the City the highest possible score for climate transparency, planning, and action. This marks multiple consecutive years that San José has achieved an "A," placing San José among a leading group of global cities committed to reducing emissions and protecting communities from climate impacts.

San José's continued recognition reflects years of work to expand clean energy, electrify buildings and transportation, improve resilience planning, and provide clear public reporting on progress. In 2024, San José was one of only 112 cities worldwide to receive an A score, a distinction the City is proud to maintain.

"Earning a spot on the CDP A List year after year shows the strength of our collective commitment," says City Manager Jennifer Maguire. "This recognition belongs to the many City departments, community partners, residents and businesses working every day to make San José healthier and more resilient. We remain focused on real progress that improves people's lives."

"San José is proud to once again be recognized among the world's climate leaders. This A List ranking reflects our practical, results-driven approach to climate action," says Mayor Matt Mahan. "We will keep advancing a future where environmental progress leads to healthier and more vibrant communities."

San José continues to earn top environmental rankings by staying committed to the City's climate action plan, Climate Smart San José, which sets ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expand renewable energy, and electrify housing and transportation across the city. The City's Energy Department, San José Clean Energy (SJCE), is a major driver of this success, helping to achieve lower carbon goals by generating clean energy for the City's one million residents and businesses. In 2024, SJCE provided at least 65% renewable energy to every customer, nearly three-times more than investor-owned utilities over the same time period.

"Our place on the CDP A List shows how essential clean electricity is to San José's climate progress," says Lori Mitchell, Energy Department Director. "Through San José Clean Energy, we're reducing emissions, supporting building and transportation electrification, and helping families and businesses transition to a cleaner future. It's rewarding to see this work recognized on a global stage."

What is the CDP Cities A List?
The CDP Cities A List is an international rating that evaluates how well cities measure, manage, and act on climate change. CDP reviews thousands of city disclosures each year. To earn an A, a city must show:
  • Clear and transparent reporting of greenhouse gas emissions
  • Strong climate goals and long-term planning
  • Real progress toward cutting carbon pollution
  • Investments that protect residents from climate risks
  • Alignment with global climate targets, including net-zero goals
Being on the A List places San José among the top-performing cities worldwide taking measurable, science-based climate action.
