Senator Declan O'Scanlon (R-Monmouth) issued the following statement regarding the recent announcement that New Jersey is getting a Major League Soccer farm team at a sports complex that was paid for with $200 million of State taxpayer money and COVID relief funds meant to help businesses and people who were suffering from COVID health impacts and overly restrictive business closures.

"$200 million of taxpayer dollars went into the sports complex home for the soccer team's wealthy owners, including COVID relief money, and this is what we're celebrating, a minor-league soccer team? Families and business suffered during COVID and are struggling with soaring electric bills, property taxes, and daily costs of living.

"Claiming this is a success and hiding the $200 million waste of taxpayer and COVID relief money behind the ribbon cutting is a slap in the face to people who want our state to focus on affordability. Minor-league mentality gets you minor-league results. New Jersey taxpayers deserve better."
