China’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland Jia Guide Delivers a Keynote Speech at UN Human Rights Council

On September 9, the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council held a panel discussion on promoting and protecting economic, social and cultural rights within the context of addressing inequalities. Human Rights Council President Mr. Suryodipuro chaired the event, and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk delivered welcoming remarks. Jia Guide, China's Permanent Representative to the UN Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, attended and delivered a keynote speech.

Jia Guide said that amid the ongoing UN fiscal strains, resource allocation for economic, social and cultural rights remains inadequate, and the international community should give these rights higher priority on the multilateral human rights agenda. He called on all countries to reinvigorate global cooperation, fulfill their obligations under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, accelerate the improvement of global human rights governance, attach greater importance to and supporting the needs of developing countries, support the role of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and provide more capacity-building and technical assistance through the Knowledge Hub for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

The panel was held pursuant to the Human Rights Council resolution on promoting and protecting economic, social and cultural rights within the context of addressing inequalities, sponsored by China. The Knowledge Hub for  Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, established by the Office of the High Commissioner as mandated by the resolution, has become the prime important UN platform for technical assistance and capacity-building in the field of economic, social and cultural rights.
