An evening of history, heritage & diplomacy: Lithuanian and Jewish communities gather in Los Angeles

On 3 September in Calabasas, the Consulate General of Lithuania in Los Angeles, together with the Valley Outreach Synagogue & Center for Jewish Life, hosted An Evening of History, Heritage & Diplomacy. The event brought together representatives of the Lithuanian and Jewish communities, diplomats, and friends of Lithuania for a night of remembrance, dialogue, and cultural exchange.
The evening honored the centuries-long Jewish presence in Lithuania, from Vilnius, once known as the "Jerusalem of the North," to communities across the country. At the same time, it paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and to the bravery of those recognized as the Righteous Among the Nations, who risked their lives to save Jews during the war. A special exhibition, The Righteous Among the Nations - Those Who Were Not Afraid to Die Became Immortal, was presented, highlighting Lithuanian stories of courage and humanity.
Lithuania ranks 2nd globally in Righteous per capita. This is an important and meaningful historical legacy of the country - an example of civic initiative. A total of 924 men and women from Lithuania have been officially recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations - honoring their courageous acts of saving Jews during the Holocaust, often risking their lives and the safety of their families.
Exhibition attendees had the opportunity to learn about the stories of the Righteous Among the Nations from Lithuania by reading the display panels and viewing a special digital version of the exhibition prepared specifically for this event.
The event featured keynote remarks by Consul General Sandra Brikaitė and a special discussion with Rabbi Ron Li-Paz and Ms. Faina Kukliansky, Chairperson of the Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Community, who flew in from Lithuania especially for the occasion. The evening atmosphere was enriched by traditional Lithuanian dances performed by the dance group 'Retro' and a heartfelt rendition of the song "Lietuva brangi " by Sigutė Miller.
The evening's surprise was a certificate of recognition and honor presented by Mayor Peter Kraut, Councilmembers Edward Albrect and David J. Shapiro of the city of Calabasas, to Consul General Sandra Brikaitė and Chairwoman of the Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Community Faina Kukliansky.
"Jewish heritage is part of Lithuania's soul," said Consul General Sandra Brikaitė. "Remembering the past, honoring courage, and building trust today are the values that guide our future." During the evening, Faina Kukliansky, Chairwoman of the Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Community, emphasized her deep respect and pride in her Litvak heritage and expressed joy that after 30 years of independence, the Lithuanian Jewish community is once again beginning a new chapter in its life - with full schools, adherence to Jewish customs and traditions, and the celebration of important holidays.
The program also celebrated Lithuania as a country of history, resilience, and opportunity, with strong cultural ties and growing partnerships between Lithuania, the United States, Israel, and the Jewish diaspora worldwide.
