Montgomery County Community Action Agency Seeks Volunteers to Support Free Tax Assistance Program

For Immediate Release: Monday, October 6, 2025

The Montgomery County Community Action Agency's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is recruiting volunteers for the upcoming tax season, which runs from January through mid-April. There is a significant need for volunteer appointment schedulers. Schedulers assist residents by answering phone calls and scheduling appointments through an online system. This volunteer role is ideal for individuals who want to support the VITA program without preparing taxes.

Volunteers can become IRS-certified VITA tax preparers, appointment schedulers, interpreters, greeters, and quality reviewers. The VITA tax program provides free tax help to County residents, including Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) holders, with household incomes of $69,000 or less.

The VITA program also connects residents to critical tax credits that help economically disadvantaged residents move towards the Self-Sufficiency Standard. Last tax season, volunteers dedicated 3,140 hours to assist the program in serving 2,397 households, resulting in a free tax impact of nearly $7.8 million. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to complete an online registration form.

"There are many families in our County who are working hard but still struggling to make ends meet," said County Executive Marc Elrich. "The Community Action Agency's VITA program helps ensure that these residents receive every tax credit they're entitled to. Volunteering with VITA is a meaningful way to give back and strengthen our community."

All VITA volunteers receive free training and can serve at sites in Rockville, Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, or Wheaton. Hours and locations are flexible. High school students may earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours by volunteering as greeters or schedulers.

Because the VITA program serves a diverse population, multilingual volunteers are highly encouraged to apply, with a particular need for those fluent in Spanish.

Two virtual information sessions for prospective volunteers will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the following times:

  • 11 a.m. to noon
  • 6 to 7 p.m.

The sessions will provide an overview of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and available volunteer opportunities.

Those interested in attending should complete the volunteer registration form.

For more information about volunteering, visit the VITA section of the Montgomery County Government website, call 240-777-1123 or email VITA staff.

The Community Action Agency is part of the County's Department of Health and Human Services.
