TDOT Announces Major Updates to Pickwick Dam Bridge Repair Project

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), in collaboration with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and contractor Jones Bros., is announcing a major update to the Pickwick Dam Bridge Repair Project that aims to minimize disruptions to the public while improving construction efficiency and safety.

Initially, the bridge deck replacement was designed using traditional in-place concrete pouring methods. This approach would have required up to 32 full weekend closures of the bridge. However, since the project was awarded, TDOT and its partners have gained valuable experience with precast concrete deck panels. The use of precast panels eliminates the need for full bridge closures, allowing traffic to continue flowing uninterrupted throughout the project's duration.

Motorists can expect to see activity on the bridge starting as early as mid-January 2026, when a temporary traffic signal will be installed. The project's new completion date is set for December 31, 2028, with the temporary signal scheduled for removal by September 30, 2028.

This signal is necessary to safely alternate traffic through a single open lane while major repairs are underway. These repairs include full replacement of the bridge deck and rail, structural concrete and steel work, and lighting upgrades.

TDOT emphasizes that this updated plan ensures uninterrupted travel across the bridge, preserving access for residents, businesses, and visitors. By avoiding full closures, the project supports the local economy and helps maintain the steady flow of tourism to Pickwick Lake. This approach not only enhances safety and efficiency but also showcases the Department's commitment to minimizing community disruption while delivering critical infrastructure improvements.
