The revised ICOM Code of Ethics is officially adopted

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has officially adopted the revised ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums, updating the global framework that guides museums and museum professionals worldwide.

Approved during the ICOM's 41st Ordinary General Assembly by 85.90%, the revised Code is the result of a multi-year participatory process led by the ICOM Ethics Committee, with the active participation from 114 ICOM National and International Committees, Regional Alliances, and Affiliated Organisations.

The revised text sets out shared ethical principles to help museums protect cultural heritage, strengthen public trust, manage collections responsibly, and serve society. It also reflects the evolving role of museums, aligning with ICOM's 2022 Museum Definition and addressing current challenges such as digital technologies, climate crisis, and the legacies of colonialism.

Recognising the diversity of museums worldwide, the revised Code sets out shared core principles to guide professional practice, while allowing flexibility depending on resources and contexts. The Code will be supported by practical guidance to help museums and museum professionals apply its principles across diverse cultural, legal, and professional contexts.
