A Kansas City-area family with strong ties to Northwest Missouri State University has enhanced a scholarship established in their name to assist students who are pursuing education degrees at the University.

The recently renamed Woolsey Future Educators Scholarship is open to first-time freshmen who hold a minimum 3.0 cumulative high school GPA and maintain full-time enrollment.

In addition to pursuing a degree in education at Northwest, recipients should be involved in high school, community and volunteer activities. Graduates of any Missouri, Kansas or Iowa high school are eligible for the scholarship, though preference is given to graduates of Excelsior Springs, Crest Ridge and North Platte high schools in Missouri.

The Woolsey family - which includes the late Dr. Wayne Woolsey '70, '71; Nancy Jordheim Woolsey '82; Dr. Ron Woolsey '74, '78; Dr. Barbara Tiffin Woolsey '81; Dr. Tucker Woolsey '01; Katie Scherer Woolsey '05; and Dr. Conrad Woolsey '02 - established the scholarship in 2021 to honor their shared legacy in education, leadership, service and lifelong learning.

"I've had the privilege of working with the Woolsey family for several years, and their dedication to the profession of teaching, at all levels, never ceases to amaze me," said Sam Mason, a senior major gift officer with Northwest's Office of University Advancement. "We are so pleased to be able to help them show their dedication to the next generation of professionals through this scholarship. I'm sure Wayne would be very pleased with the work they have done to help their fellow Bearcats."

Through the scholarship, the Woolsey family seeks to support students who share their values of strong character, academic commitment, leadership potential and a spirit of service to others.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually.

"It represents our belief that investing in future educators is one of the most meaningful contributions we can make," said Ron, who has worked in the education field for 44 years. "The idea grew from family conversations and became a shared effort, with my brother, Wayne, playing a key role in bringing it to life."

Members of the Woolsey family have dedicated their lives to education - as teachers, coaches and administrators - and believe learning has the power to transform lives, strengthen communities and create opportunities for future generations. Through the years, dinner table conversations with the Woolsey family often turned to lesson plans, struggling students and the quiet victories when a learner finally understands. Cumulatively, they have contributed more than 150 years to the education profession, teaching students of all ages.

That legacy, Ron says, began with his parents, who expressed the importance of education. As they grew, brothers Ron and Wayne "never quit going to school." They pursued their bachelor's and master's degrees at Northwest because of the school's long-standing reputation for preparing successful educators.

Tucker and Conrad, the sons of Wayne and Nancy, have continued that legacy. Tucker, a middle school mathematics teacher, and his wife, Katie, a high school physical education teacher, are employed with Crest Ridge Schools in Centerview, Missouri. Conrad has built a career in sport psychology, leadership and high-performance coaching.

"Both of my parents being in education, showing me the impact that they made within their community, with kids, as educators, certainly sparked my interest," Tucker said, adding that he felt a calling to help other people, and the practical experience he gained at Northwest fueled his interest. "Once I got into coaching and got into the education field, got into Maryville Middle School, did some observations, worked with some great people, great teachers as mentors - that just reaffirmed that education was the place for me."

After Wayne died last December, the family was inspired to broaden their scholarship to support more Northwest students. During his 37-year career as teacher, coach and administrator in Iowa and Missouri - coupled with his dedication and enthusiasm for the Bearcats - Wayne always looked forward to working with other educators and conveying his Northwest pride.

"Every teacher leaves a legacy through their students who go on to influence others," Ron said. "Teaching has given far more to our family than we could ever repay. We hope this scholarship will encourage future educators to carry forward the same spirit of service that has guided our family. If it helps even one aspiring teacher begin a lifetime of inspiring and supporting others, it will continue a legacy far greater than our own."
