The Department of Public Utilities will be conducting sanitary sewer smoke testing in the Western Branch section of Chesapeake during the week of September 22, 2025, along the streets bordering Jolliff Road. See the mapfor more detailed information on locations.Smoke testing involves dispersing of smoke into the sewer lines in order to locate holes where groundwater and/or storm water may enter. The test is performed block to block and will only involve about ½ hour at each residence site. A bright green notice will be placed on the residence door a few days before the testing begins. If smoke is detected in the house during the test, open the doors or windows to let the smoke clear out. Report smoke in the house immediately to the workers conducting the test or by calling 757-382-3417.
The smoke is relatively harmless, but may be irritating to nasal passages. Any smoke irritation will be temporary. It is recommended that persons with heart or respiratory conditions leave the house during the test or call 757-382-3417 to have the residence sealed off from the test.
