Air Force Granddaughter Surprises Grandma on Final Day of Chemotherapy

For Bard Ewers, completing her last chemotherapy at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital was already an emotional milestone. But when she arrived at her last appointment, she was surprised to find her 19-year-old granddaughter, Faith Dyer, waiting in uniform.

"I didn't expect that in a million years. It was just utter shock," Ewers says, with Dyer telling NBC News, "I was shaking. I was nervous and excited, and I just could not wait to see her."

Dyer serves in the U.S. Air Force and is stationed seven hours away at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. After learning about her grandma's cancer returning, Dyer made arrangements with her supervisor to make it for her final appointment. The moment was captured on video as OhioHealth nurses and staff cheered them on.

"Just to know that a young person would care that much and put in that kind of an effort to come and see their grandma, I felt very loved and very special that day," Ewers told NBC News.

This is not the first time Ewers has battled breast cancer. She was first diagnosed in 2012, but went into remission after radiation. When she learned the cancer had returned in 2025, she began her second treatment journey. After fighting for the second time, she was not only able to celebrate by ringing the bell, but also experienced an unforgettable surprise from her granddaughter.

The video was posted on TikTok and gained more than 46,000 views and thousands of heartfelt comments. The emotional moment resonated with viewers, connecting those who have shared similar experiences with loved ones battling cancer. For Dyer, the response was a reminder that even through difficult experiences, people can support each other from all over the world.

"The comments definitely made the video special because you got to see how everyone's going through something," Dyer said. "We can just support each other."
