The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function, Óscar López, has highlighted the value of Spain's reindustrialisation process, especially in digital transformation and ecological transition, which he has placed at the heart of the country's good economic data, which is again reflected this year in the latest OECD report. He did so during his address to the OECD Council Ministerial Meeting in Paris, where the role of digital and emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, in fostering innovation and the renewal of productive sectors was discussed.
The minister highlighted the 2.2% growth figure for Spain for 2026 indicated in the latest OECD report, which, according to López, can be explained by the commitment to reindustrialisation, especially from a focus on digital transformation and green transition.
In reference to this digital transformation, the minister assured that, although "Spain and Europe are aware that we lost the first part of the AI race, we are not going to lose the second part, which is the adoption of AI". In this respect, López explained that there are three fundamental pillars on which the Spanish strategy is based.
On the one hand, "talent and training", said the minister, who recalled that, in Spain, "we have flooded the universities with AI chairs". The second pillar is infrastructure, about which he explained that our country has two European AI factories and that "we are going to aspire to have one of the first gigafactories" in Europe.
Thirdly, López referred to "sovereignty", especially in the industrial sphere. "We are investing in all layers of AI," he said.
The minister concluded by reiterating the Government of Spain's commitment to digital transformation and new disruptive technologies, from AI to quantum.
