Holiday schedule & winter yard waste collection

West Des Moines City Hall and most City offices will be closed for the holidays on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 24 and 25, 2025, and Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026. Recycling and garbage collection will be delayed one day following the December 25 holiday and New Year's Day on January 1.

Residents will have one more chance to dispose of yard waste and real (not artificial) Christmas trees during a special Winter Collection period, which takes place from December 29, 2025 ‒ January 9, 2026. Collection will be delayed by one day after New Year's Day.

During Winter Collection, residents may dispose of live Christmas trees by placing one Compost It! sticker on each tree. All trees must be free of decorations and placed at the curb by 6 a.m. on your collection day. Wreaths and garland are not accepted. Stickers are sold at participating grocery and hardware stores.

Since Winter Collection is the last opportunity to dispose of yard waste before spring, be sure to use Compost It! bags, attach a Compost It! sticker to generic bags, or use your Compost It! yard waste cart to ensure yard waste is picked up by collection crews.
