Building Confidence Beyond the Classroom

Building Confidence Beyond the Classroom

A third-year residential student at Lufton College recently enjoyed a successful and confidence-building trip into town during the long bank holiday weekend, as part of developing their independent living skills within the college curriculum.

The extended weekend break and with the improving weather bringing bouts of sunshine, the outing provided a positive opportunity to engage with the local community in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

Starting from the White Horse accommodation, they walked along the main road and through the centre of Yeovil, safely using several pedestrian crossings along the way. They demonstrated good awareness by waiting for the green signal and crossing when it was safe.

A key highlight of the trip was a visit to the barbers. Haircuts have previously been a challenge, but through regular visits and the support of a patient barber, this has become a much more positive experience. Over time, confidence has grown significantly, with the student now tolerating clippers, including around more sensitive areas such as behind the ears. They were supported to use strategies that help them feel comfortable, such as taking breaks when needed. Encouragingly, these breaks have reduced over time, allowing for a smoother and quicker haircut.

Following the haircut, the trip continued to a local eatery in the town centre. Using a pictorial menu, they independently chose a sausage and egg meal and were supported to pay, further developing their independence and decision-making skills.

While these may appear to be small steps, they make a significant difference for this young person. Each experience builds confidence, independence, and essential life skills, all of which contribute positively to their future prospects and readiness for greater independence beyond college.

This experience also reflects continued learning taking place even outside of formal college education time, demonstrating how everyday community-based activities reinforce and extend learning in meaningful, real-world experiences.

Fresh haircut and a hearty plate of food, looking sharp and enjoying the moment in style!
