What Is Booking Holdings Building That Investors Should Watch

Shares of Booking Holdings (BKNG) lost 18.4% over the past year, while the S&P 500 returned 17.1%. In October, Booking announced a new company for an AI venture, with a planned $100 million investment. What is that new business, and is there any sign yet that it pays?

Booking Holdings Is Building An AI Travel Agent

Booking Holdings is developing travel tools run by AI, and the firm added a new company named Vayo in October. Launched in private beta on October 14, Vayo functions as a personal travel agent that organizes everything a traveler has booked and learns how they travel. Management said on the August 4 call that the company had begun testing a new AI-powered discovery experience on Booking.com, which helps travelers in the early inspiration phase of planning a trip.

Vayo is too new to show results. The only evidence so far covers Booking's wider AI spending, and it comes from management and shows up in costs. Management said on that call that Booking already sees a positive return on its AI investments as a company. They also said customer service cost per booking keeps falling at a double-digit rate as a result of combined AI and human capabilities. This amounts to a cost saving, and no payoff in bookings has shown up yet.

How Big Is The AI Bet Next To Booking's Business?

The planned $100 million for Vayo is small compared to Booking's broader business, which brought in $28.2 billion of revenue over the four quarters to June 30, 2026. Booking can fund more of this investment from savings. Management raised the yearly savings it expects from its cost program to about $650 million from about $550 million, saying those savings give the company room to speed up innovation.

The share price appears to assume little from any of this. Booking stock trades at 17.5 times its earnings over the past twelve months, against 23.0 for the S&P 500. The shares also closed on October 20 at 24.8% below their highest close of the past year, reached on January 9, 2026.

What Has To Go Right For Booking's AI Push?

Booking has to show that its AI tools win bookings, and management has not yet put a number on that. When an analyst asked on the August 4 call whether Priceline's AI travel assistant had improved conversion rates or bookings per customer, management provided no figure. The company also said on the call it was very early and that it was not ready to give percentages or numbers.

Booking's next report is expected on or around November 3, 2026. The measure to watch then is any figure management gives on bookings that come through its AI tools.

How To Act On BKNG?

Not necessarily on Booking Holdings alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Here are two companies from Booking Holdings' own industry that have beaten it. Over the five years to October 2026, Royal Caribbean stock rose 255% and Lindblad Expeditions stock rose 139%, while Booking Holdings stock rose 76%.

Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000. See how we find the leaders.
