Public advised to remain alert for pavement failures during heat wave

SPRINGFIELD - With extremely high temperatures and humidity impacting the entire state, the Illinois Department of Transportation is cautioning the public to be on the lookout for pavement failures on roads and to stay alert for crews making emergency repairs.

Pavement failures, buckling and blowouts occur with little warning during periods of prolonged heat and humidity, resulting in uneven driving surfaces. While it's impossible to predict where or when these failures might occur, maintenance personnel will be monitoring road conditions and on standby to make repairs as quickly as possible when they are observed and reported.

Pavement failures can be reported to IDOT by calling 800-452-4368 or by reaching out to law enforcement via 911.

The public is advised to anticipate slowing traffic and move over for workers and other emergency personnel when repairs are being made.

Additionally, if you are traveling during extreme heat, pack extra water. Becoming stranded could be dangerous without proper hydration, as dehydration can happen quickly.
