The City of League City Fire Marshal's Office regularly monitors the weather conditions directly impacting our citizens. Currently, within Galveston and Harris Counties, we are experiencing drought conditions, resulting in an increased risk for outdoor fires that can quickly spread because of the extremely dry vegetation. We would like to remind our citizens that outdoor burning is prohibited. Some of the exceptions to this include:
1. Non-commercial preparation of food
2. Supplying warmth during cold weather
Other exemptions of this ordinance require that a permit be issued from the Fire Marshal's Office. One mechanism that we utilize to determine if a burn permit will be issued is the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), which is provided by Texas A&M University. When the local rating reaches 600, which indicates significant drought conditions, all burn permits are suspended, and no new burn permits will be issued until our area is no longer experiencing significant drought conditions.
As of October 18, 2025 the current KBDI is 622 within Galveston County.
As of October 16, 2025, Harris County has an active Burn Ban in effect.
During any Burn Ban within a county there shall be no open burning permitted for any reason.
The Fire Marshal's Office will continue to post updates as conditions change.
